Experts suggest that other car manufacturers should learn from BYD and also develop electric vehicles for rural areas

Experts recommend other car makers follow BYD's lead and produce electric vehicles for rural areas

【PhoneAuto News】Currently, it can be determined that electric vehicles are a major aspect of the future development of the global automotive industry. However, even in the Chinese market, the penetration rate of new energy vehicles is only about 30% for the time being, which is still significantly lower than that of traditional fuel vehicles. Additionally, due to limitations such as charging facilities and prices, electric vehicles are mainly sold in urban areas. There is still a huge development space for electric vehicles in the vast rural areas of China.

Recently, PhoneAuto noticed that Cui Dongshu, the Secretary-General of the China Passenger Car Association, stated in an article that currently, electric vehicles are mainly used for charging, and the function of reverse power transmission is not yet available. Furthermore, the charging mode of photovoltaic power generation for charging piles is not yet mature, and effective product design is needed to meet the demand. By encouraging new energy vehicle owners to charge and store energy during low-power periods and discharge energy back to the grid during high-power periods, a dynamic and effective “new energy vehicle + grid” energy system can be constructed to play a role in peak shaving and filling valleys. Currently, BYD’s products are very good, with an external power source that can output electricity. Other models should also catch up. Cui Dongshu also claimed that currently, on average, each electric vehicle has at least 20 kWh of electricity available for grid energy storage and peak adjustment after charging and use every day. If the number of electric vehicles in rural China reaches 50 million by 2030, assuming that each electric vehicle charges the grid with 5 kWh of electricity every day, the annual charging volume can reach 70 billion kWh. This is a huge improvement in electricity and a good reflection of increased income for farmers.

According to data from the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers, in April 2023, China’s passenger car production was 1.778 million units, and sales were 1.811 million units, an increase of 78.5% and 87.7%, respectively, compared with the same period in 2022. Among them, the production and sales of new energy passenger cars were 640,000 units and 636,000 units, respectively.
