France and Norway to construct wireless charging roads Is Death Stranding becoming a reality?
【phoneauto News】Currently, although technologies such as solid-state batteries and 800V platforms are under development or already available, energy supplementation is still one of the drawbacks of electric vehicles. Recently, phoneauto noticed that an Israeli company named Electreon has won bids in France and Norway to build wireless charging roads for both countries.
In France, Electreon plans to install a two-kilometer long wireless charging road on a highway near its capital, Paris. There will also be wireless charging stations for cars along the road. In Norway, Electreon will use its electric road system technology on a road near the bus stops operated by AtB AS, which can help local electric buses to charge wirelessly. Their ultimate goal is to establish a complete electric road in Trondheim, Norway, to provide charging for electric buses, trucks, and taxis. It is reported that the French Ministry of Transport has stated after research that the wireless charging road technology can reduce CO2 emissions from road freight by 86%. The local roads in Norway can also reduce the size of the battery pack for electric buses.
It is worth mentioning that electric vehicle charging roads have actually been around for about 10 years. As early as 2013, South Korea built such a road, where designers and engineers laid cables under the road surface and used special devices to convert electricity into electromagnetic energy and transfer it to the car’s battery, allowing the car to charge while driving. In addition, in 2021, the Indiana Department of Transportation and Purdue University in the United States announced their plans to develop the world’s first non-contact wireless charging concrete road segment on a highway.
