General Motors, Honda, and other strong alliances plan to launch autonomous ride-hailing services in 2026.

Powerhouse Allies GM and Honda to Team Up for Launch of Autonomous Ride-Hailing Services by 2026

【PhoneAuto News】On October 19th, globally renowned car manufacturers Honda Motor Co., General Motors Co., and autonomous driving technology company Cruise announced that the three companies have signed a memorandum of understanding to establish a joint venture and plan to launch autonomous ride-hailing services in Japan in early 2026.

PhoneAuto understands that the new joint venture is expected to be established in the first half of 2024. The planned Cruise Origin autonomous ride-hailing service will be entirely operated by autonomous driving technology, picking up users at designated locations and dropping them off at their destinations. Users can complete the entire process from hailing a ride to payment through a smartphone application.

It is reported that the Cruise Origin is an autonomous vehicle without a driver’s seat and steering wheel, featuring a spacious cabin that can accommodate six people. This design aims to provide a new travel experience to meet the needs of different customer groups such as business professionals, families, and tourists. Honda stated that this autonomous ride-hailing service will offer a new travel experience in Japan.

General Motors, Cruise, and Honda plan to launch the aforementioned autonomous ride-hailing service in central Tokyo in early 2026, followed by expansion to other areas. Initially, the service fleet will consist of several dozen Cruise Origin vehicles, which will then expand to 500 vehicles. It is worth noting that Cruise currently offers limited-range autonomous ride-hailing services in San Francisco, USA. Honda stated in 2018 that it will invest $2 billion in Cruise over a period of 12 years. This collaboration will undoubtedly further drive the development and application of autonomous driving technology.
