Huawei XMAGE Imaging celebrates one-year anniversary, leading mobile imaging trend with innovation

【phoneauto News】In July of last year, Huawei officially launched a new brand – Huawei XMAGE, marking Huawei’s unique position in the field of mobile imaging. Today, Huawei XMAGE has officially celebrated its first anniversary, and through the validation of various products such as the Mate50 series, P60 series, and Mate X3, it has gained high recognition from more and more consumers. From capturing clarity to capturing reality, Huawei XMAGE has upgraded the “optical-mechanical-electronic-computational” full-chain process to provide consumers with a new mobile imaging solution.

“Optical” refers to optical design, and Huawei has been leading the industry in single-camera to dual-camera and multi-camera configurations. In addition, Huawei is at the forefront of the industry in terms of free-form surfaces and periscope lenses. “Mechanical” refers to mechanical structure, and the most typical example is the periscope solution that meets the needs of telephoto photography. This solution cleverly solves the problem of insufficient light path length in the 6-9mm internal lens of smartphones by converting the vertical direction into the horizontal direction. The innovative structure revolutionizes the user’s telephoto experience. “Electronic” refers to photoelectric conversion, and the most typical example is Huawei’s unique RYYB filter array, which increases the light intake of sensors by 30% compared to traditional RGGB filters. Combined with post-processing color adjustments for various scenes, it ultimately achieves outstanding photography capabilities. “Computational” refers to image algorithms, which process the recorded digital information through the basic capabilities of optical and computational photography, presenting and exploring more effects to achieve better image results.

In terms of image quality, Huawei has solved the problem of clarity in mobile photography. Taking the optical system as an example, Huawei has developed free-form surface lenses, periscope telephoto lenses, and multi-camera systems to address issues such as distortion and zooming from a technical perspective. The Huawei Mate X3 foldable flagship is equipped with a 12 million pixel periscope telephoto lens, providing 5x optical zoom and 50x digital zoom capabilities, allowing users to capture distant scenes and subjects more clearly. On the Huawei P60 series, Huawei systematically solves the industry’s challenge of telephoto shooting in low-light scenarios with its super-focused night vision telephoto system, constructing a stronghold for Huawei XMAGE with technology.

After achieving clarity in photography, Huawei then focused on color style recognition, hoping to allow consumers to see real colors under various complex light sources while also having a clear view of distant scenery. Huawei’s imaging color research team brought together 7 expert teams from Huawei research institutes located in China, Finland, Japan, and other parts of the world. These teams cover 8 research fields including art, psychology, optics, and color science. They used nearly 4 million submissions from Huawei’s New Imaging Contest users as samples and collaborated with professional institutions such as the Color Research Institute at Tsinghua University’s Art and Science Research Center to continuously accumulate and refine, establishing Huawei’s exclusive imaging style.

On the Huawei P60 series, we see three styles of Huawei’s imaging XMAGE: original, vibrant, and bright. The original style is authentic and accurate, while the vibrant style fully renders an immersive atmosphere and rich and varied colors. The bright style is lively, clear, and bright, creating different atmospheric feelings. When faced with different scenes, users can better record and create using the different color styles of Huawei’s imaging XMAGE, turning images into stories.

Standing at the forefront of Huawei’s XMAGE imaging technology, we see the relentless exploration of Huawei in the areas of optics, mechanics, electronics, and algorithms over the past few years. From the P30 series’ RYYB pixel arrangement that significantly improves the amount of light entering the CMOS, to the P40 series’ IMX700 ultra-large CMOS combined with RYYB for a qualitative improvement in light intake, Huawei’s imaging reputation has gradually taken shape. Subsequently, the Mate 40 Pro’s free-curved lens suppresses distortion from the source, and the P50 series integrates the capabilities of multiple lenses into a dual-camera unit system, allowing thin and light smartphones to unleash powerful imaging capabilities.

The Mate 50 series pioneered the ten-level adjustable physical aperture, which intelligently selects the aperture size based on the scene. The P60 series introduced super-focus night vision telephoto, solving the problem of long-range night photography with a multi-lens module and an F2.1 large aperture. The Mate X3, on the other hand, incorporates a periscope telephoto lens into an ultra-thin body, continuously pushing the boundaries of foldable screen imaging. Looking back, these technological achievements are all traceable.

In terms of AI, Huawei has long been making arrangements. As early as 2017, the Huawei Mate 10 series, equipped with the world’s first AI chip Kirin 970, introduced AI photography for the first time. Since then, AI photography has become a standard feature in mobile imaging both domestically and internationally. In the P60 series and Mate X3 series, Huawei also introduced the XD Fusion Pro, a new texture engine that accurately reproduces the authentic texture of daily life. The new texture engine can extract global and local feature information of the subject in real environments based on AI deep neural network learning, achieving millisecond-level precise reproduction of the authentic texture as seen by the human eye.

Over the years, the charm demonstrated by Huawei’s XMAGE imaging technology through continuous innovation has been recognized by many users. When it comes to cross-border collaborations among smartphone manufacturers, Huawei has already established its own unique imaging style, opening up a new exploration in mobile imaging.

I believe that in the second year of Huawei’s XMAGE imaging, Huawei will continue to innovate along the dimensions of optics, electronics, and algorithms, and at the same time make the imaging style of Huawei’s XMAGE even more popular.
