Arm launches new smartphone technology, adopted by MediaTek’s next-generation products
Arm's new smartphone technology used in MediaTek's upcoming products
【PhoneAuto News】Recently, Arm Ltd, a chip technology company under SoftBank, launched new chip technology for mobile devices. Taiwan’s smartphone chip manufacturer, MediaTek Inc, stated that it will use this technology in its next-generation products and that the new chips will help improve the performance of the next generation of smartphones.
According to PhoneAuto, as a long-term supplier of mid-to-low-end smartphone chips, MediaTek has been promoting the supply of high-end smartphone chips in the market. Arm sells chip designs for making its own hardware blueprints. At the Taipei International Computer Show (Computex), the company released Immortalis-G720 for video image processing and artificial intelligence applications, as well as Cortex-X4, which will become the core design of mobile device brains. Arm stated that the performance of these two new designs has increased by 15% compared to the previous generations, and the power consumption of Cortex-X4 has been reduced by 40%, which is crucial for long-lasting smartphones.

When asked if the chip tape-out meant that Arm was manufacturing chips for sale, rather than relying on its long-term business model of providing chip designs to chip manufacturers, Arm’s customer business line general manager Chris Bergey stated that this is a step to help customers test new manufacturing technologies. Arm does not engage in chip sales, that is not our job. It is reported that last month there were reports that Arm was developing its own chips to showcase its design capabilities.
Finally, Arm stated that Cortex-X4 is produced using TSMC’s N3E process, which is an industry first.
