Toyota's chief scientist can't confirm if EVs will be the main focus of cars

【PhoneAuto News】Recently, PhoneAuto learned that Gill Pratt, who serves as the chief scientist at Toyota, said in an interview that the transformation to electric vehicles (EVs) is rapidly progressing, but Toyota advocates for a “multi-path (omni-directional)” strategy that fully introduces environmentally friendly models such as hybrid vehicles (HVs). Regarding whether EVs will become the core of automobiles in the future, Pratt said, “We are not sure, and the answer is still hard to predict.”

When asked by a reporter during the interview, “The transformation to EVs is rapidly progressing globally, including in China. Are there any foreseeable risks?” Pratt replied, “I think many people believe that Japanese companies are lagging behind in the field of EVs, but that is not the problem. Although the automotive industry has matured for decades, there are still many automotive companies and no leading company dominates the entire market. On the contrary, sometimes creating the same thing later can result in better results.”

It is worth mentioning that Gill Pratt once again called for not giving up on fuel vehicles too early, and that a rapid transition to electric vehicles may cause some owners to continue using old fuel vehicles. He called for giving hybrid vehicles more time. Subsidies for pure electric vehicles and restrictions on other routes may encourage some people to choose electric vehicles, but for other vehicle owners, this may have the opposite effect. The time required to transition to electric vehicles will be longer than expected, and using a multi-pronged approach of hybrid power and alternative fuels will be better for the environment and the automotive industry. Battery materials and renewable charging infrastructure will eventually be perfected, but it will take decades to scale up battery materials, mines, renewable energy generation facilities, transmission lines, and seasonal energy storage facilities.
