Full Upgrade! Test Drive of Xiaopeng P7i Can this car bring Xiaopeng back to the peak?

Xiaopeng P7i Test Drive Can it revive Xiaopeng?

【PhoneAuto Test Drive】Xiaopeng Motors, once one of the “three giants” of China’s new car forces, saw its model Xiaopeng P7 become a best-selling model with excellent sales figures and reputation. However, due to not upgrading for a long time and the price war with other competitive models, the sales of Xiaopeng P7 plummeted. And since Xiaopeng Motors failed to introduce a more popular product than Xiaopeng P7, the entire company has also fallen into a crisis.

Xiaopeng P7i

As a new generation model, Xiaopeng P7i was once seen as Xiaopeng’s lifeline. From the sales performance alone, Xiaopeng P7i has indeed achieved some results, but there is still a big gap compared to the peak sales of the old Xiaopeng P7. Although the initial production capacity problem is the main reason for the low delivery volume, the starting price of nearly 250,000 yuan undoubtedly affects its sales. After all, the starting prices of the competitive models BYD Han EV and Tesla Model 3 next door are much lower than it.

So how is the product power of this Xiaopeng P7i? Today, PhoneAuto will share with you the test drive experience.

Compared with the current models on sale, the new car has not made drastic changes to the appearance, retaining the family design language and only making changes in details. Xiaopeng’s iconic split-style headlights are still retained, but the shape of the headlights has changed. From the side, the body lines are still very soft, creating an elegant visual effect. When it comes to the rear of the car, the new model has also made corresponding adjustments to the shape of the taillights, although it is still a through design, the width of the light group has increased.

The new Xiaopeng P7i is 4888mm long, 1896mm wide, 1450mm high, with a wheelbase of 2998mm, a high-length ratio of 0.297, a low wind resistance of 0.236Cd, a 460mm supercar-level ultra-low center of gravity and a 110mm ultra-thin battery pack.

In terms of the interior, the new car is still equipped with a dual-spoke multifunction steering wheel, with the latest family style design, coupled with the LCD instrument panel and central control screen with a linked design, creating a full sense of technology. In terms of intelligent technology configuration, Xiaopeng P7i is equipped with XmartOS4.0 intelligent car system and built-in 8155 chip for a smoother in-car experience.

In terms of driving assistance, Xiaopeng P7i incorporates laser radar on both sides of the headlights, and the intelligent driving assistance chip is also replaced by dual NVIDIA Orin-X, with a computing power increased to 508Tops. At the same time, the driving assistance system has also been optimized. Xiaopeng P7i is equipped with the second-generation intelligent driving assistance system XNGP, which is the same as Xiaopeng G9. The XNGP second-generation platform can achieve real-time modeling only based on self-perception, gradually getting rid of the reliance on high-precision maps and achieving “mapless” perception. However, currently only Guangzhou, Shanghai and other cities have opened the city NGP function, and other cities have not yet opened the city NGP.

In terms of intelligent cockpit, Xiaopeng P7i’s car system has been replaced with a high-pass 8155 cockpit chip, equipped with a new Xmart OS 4.0 version, with higher computing power and faster car reaction speed. In terms of voice wake-up, Xiaopeng P7i can achieve human-machine dialogue throughout the car at all times. For example, without calling “Xiaopeng,” you can directly speak out commands, and it can quickly help you achieve them.

In terms of handling, the new P7i is equipped with CDC shock absorption system (four-wheel drive model) and SACHS shock absorbers, and it is also calibrated with the Porsche team to achieve a balance between handling stability and driving comfort. In addition, the Xiaopeng P7i four-wheel drive version adds a driver mode, which is a professional driving mode specially designed for users who love driving. This set of modes is more like a complete package of modes and cannot customize the options, such as suspension soft and hard adjustment and steering adjustment. That is to say, as long as this mode is selected, the torque distribution is prioritized over ESP adjustment of vehicle dynamics, and ESP does not excessively intervene in vehicle power, maximizing the absorption of vehicle performance limits.

In terms of power, the test drive model this time is the Xiaopeng P7i 610 Max performance version, with a maximum horsepower of 473 Ps, a peak torque of 757 N·m, and an official zero-to-100 km/h acceleration time of only 3.9s. At the moment when the accelerator is stepped on, the vehicle can instantly burst out strong torque. Even if the back and seat are tightly attached, the strong back-pushing feeling can make people feel a little dizzy.

In terms of braking, due to the Brembo brake calipers, the braking effect of the Xiaopeng P7i is very good. The official braking distance at a speed of 100 km/h is 33.3 meters, and the actual test results are very close, and this standard can still be maintained after multiple test drives. However, it is worth mentioning that the braking calibration of the old Xiaopeng P7 model is very average, and it feels like it cannot be stopped when lightly stepped on, and the “nodding” phenomenon will occur when heavily stepped on. This problem has not been solved in the new Xiaopeng P7i.

Xiaopeng P7i Suspension

In terms of handling, the Xiaopeng P7i’s steering wheel feels very natural, with minimal play and no need for break-in. The steering is very accurate when entering a turn, giving the driver more confidence in the car. Thanks to P7i’s four-wheel intelligent drive and Sachs’ multi-valve suspension, the P7i is more comfortable to drive than the competitor Model 3, making it more in line with consumers’ expectations of a luxury sports car.

As for the chassis tuning, although the chassis tuning ability of new car manufacturers has always been questioned, the performance of the Xiaopeng P7i’s chassis is indeed impressive. Overall, the feeling is moderate between soft and hard. While ensuring the road feel and support, it can also provide excellent shock absorption and comfort.

Xiaopeng P7i

In terms of intelligent driving, the Xiaopeng P7i is equipped with dual Orin-X chips, providing 508 TOPS of high computing power, and is equipped with 31 perception components including 2 lidars, 5 millimeter-wave radars, 12 ultrasonic sensors, and 12 cameras. With the assistance of these hardware devices, it can be found that after CNGP is enabled, the recognition ability of the P7i has been significantly improved, and pedestrians, bicycles, ice cream buckets, and turn signals of the front car on the roadside can be accurately identified.

After actual experience, the Xiaopeng P7i’s urban auxiliary driving is indeed very reassuring, and the vehicle accelerates or decelerates very smoothly, without being very sudden, which is very friendly to the rear passengers. It is worth mentioning that after the new car stops at a traffic light intersection, it needs to manually restart the auxiliary driving, but the official personnel said that it will be optimized in the future.

The Xiaopeng P7i, as a small upgraded model of the Xiaopeng P7, has made more detailed adjustments to many details of the original car, improving the overall vehicle’s performance, intelligence, comfort, and other aspects, making it a more comprehensive product.

Although it is “worth the money,” in the current “overlapping” new energy vehicle market, the starting price of 249,900 yuan for the Xiaopeng P7i makes many people hesitate. If the official can launch more significant promotional activities in the future, perhaps this new car will be more competitive in the market.
