Return to F1! Honda to provide power units for Aston Martin Racing from 2026 onwards

Honda to supply power units for Aston Martin Racing in F1 from 2026

【PhoneAuto News】The old Honda is coming back again! On May 24, according to the Japan Broadcasting Corporation (NHK), Japanese automaker Honda announced its intention to cooperate with the F1 team Aston Martin and return to the arena as a powertrain supplier in 2026.

Honda cooperates with Aston Martin

In 2020, Honda announced that it would close its F1 project after the 2021 season and withdraw from F1 as scheduled after Max Verstappen won the driver’s world championship with its engine for the first time in the following year. However, as part of the agreement, the Japanese manufacturer will continue to provide technical support to the new power system company established by the Austrian company after selling the power unit IP to Red Bull, and will continue until the end of the 2025 season. Honda won three championship titles with Red Bull in 2021 and 2022. Currently, the Austrian team is in the lead on the 2023 season manufacturer’s annual points list. Honda clearly stated that it is working with Aston Martin to win more championships.

Honda Racing Corporation President Koichi Watanabe said: “They are currently studying various measures to strengthen the team’s strength and strive to win the F1 championship title. Therefore, they have given high praise to our F1 power unit technology, and we can appreciate their sincere attitude and strong winning passion. We have decided to work together to strive for the championship title as Aston Martin-Honda.”

Regarding the successful achievement of this cooperation, Aston Martin Performance Technology Group CEO Martin Whitmarsh said: “Our future business partnership with Honda is one of the final pieces in Aston Martin’s ambitious plan for F1.”

Honda Global CEO Seiji Kuraishi said: “The key reason we decided to accept the new challenge of F1 is that the world’s top racing form is striving to become a sustainable series, which is consistent with Honda’s direction to achieve carbon neutrality. It will also become a platform to promote the development of our electrification technology. We believe that the technology and knowledge gained from this new challenge may be directly applicable to our future mass-produced electric vehicles, such as flagship electric sports models and electrification technologies in various fields, including eVTOL currently under development.”
