Musk will visit India next week and Tesla may build a factory there

【PhoneAuto News】On June 21st, PhoneAuto noticed that according to “Caijing.com.cn”, Tesla CEO Musk said that he had a good conversation with Indian Prime Minister Modi, and he will visit India next week. He is confident that Tesla will enter India and achieve this goal as soon as possible.

Previously, PhoneAuto reported that an informed source revealed that Musk will introduce Tesla’s plan to build a new manufacturing base in India to local high-level officials in India. The time should be Tuesday local time in the United States. This will be the first high-level dialogue between Tesla and Indian officials on the company’s expansion plan in India. Last month, Tesla executives visited India and held talks with Indian officials and ministers to discuss the establishment of automobile manufacturing bases and the production of batteries in India.

It is worth mentioning that Tesla has had plans for the Indian market for a long time, but encountered some setbacks before. According to Reuters, in 2022, three informed sources said that because Tesla was unable to ensure a reduction in import tariffs, the company shelved plans to sell electric cars in India and reassigned some of its Indian teams. It is reported that Tesla tried to sell electric cars produced by American and Chinese factories in the Indian market at lower tariffs to test the market demand in India, but the Indian side requested that Tesla promise to manufacture cars locally before reducing tariffs. If chosen, the tariffs imposed by India on imported Tesla cars may be as high as 100%.

Currently, Tesla is looking for a location for a new car factory. It is very likely that it will go to India to build the factory. In addition to India, Mexico, Indonesia, and France also seem to be places where Tesla can choose.
